Columbus –Treasurer Kevin L. Boyce is calling on professional organizations to help Ohioans claim tens of millions of dollars that could be boosting their pocketbooks and Ohio’s economy.
Experts believe that as many as one in every five Ohioans are eligible to receive payments from the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, but they don’t know about it, don’t ask for it, and don’t get their money.
That’s why Treasurer Boyce, who is also chair of the Ohio Coalition on the Earned Income Tax Credit, is urging members of the Ohio State Bar Association and the Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants to help him by volunteering for the “Volunteer Income Tax Assistance” or “VITA” program.
VITA provides free income tax preparation for low-Income, elderly, disabled and limited English-speaking people. Many qualify for the EITC, but just don’t know about it. With trained professionals helping them prepare their taxes for free, Boyce believes they will get the help they need.
“VITA is important for Ohioans, particularly those who are really feeling the crunch in this tough economy,” Treasurer Boyce said. “Not only does the program offer free, sound tax preparation, but these trained professionals will ensure Ohioans know about the EITC and how to get it.”
Said Treasurer Boyce: “This will mean more dollars will be pumped into the bank accounts of families and into Ohio’s economy.”
Volunteering for VITA, Boyce said, will help save Ohio families thousands of dollars during a time when many need it most. Volunteers are trained and certified by the IRS
